A belated welcome to our new vet, Joana Rolo de Sousa, who joined the Aanifeira team at the end of April in the veterinary area. Joana studied veterinary science from 2003 – 2008 at the Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) during which time she participated in an exchange student program in her 4th year at the Facultad de Veterinaria da Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), Spain. Immediately after this she did an internship at the Porto Veterinary Hospital (HVP) where she specialized in anaesthetics, surgery and small animal clinical treatment. It was during her time at the Porto Veterinary Hospital that she had the opportunity to interrupt her internship there and participate in a three month internship from January to March 2009 at University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, U.S.A., where she did extracurricular training in the area of soft tissue surgery, orthopedics for small animals and the area of anesthesia for small and large animals. Following her time in the U.S.A. she returned to Porto Veterinary Hospital (HVP) to finish her internship there.
Joana joins Aanifeira veterinarian, Claudia Valadares Pinto, in working together to provide a more complete and better service to our 1,500 members. We recently extended the clinic’s opening hours to our members from 09H00 to 20H00 (instead of closing at 17H00) which we hope will give members, who hold daytime jobs, an opportunity to come to the shelter and have their animals attended to after work.
Many of our interns have already met Joana and she, together with Claudia, supervise their work and time whilst allowing them the opportunity to gain experience in all aspects of an animal shelter clinic. Welcome to the team Joana, great to have you!
