Last week Aanifeira received two new arrivals into the shelter. Firstly there was tiny Joyce, a mini pup found on the roadside with a skin condition on her head and an obvious worm problem with her big tummy. An Aanifeira member found her and bought her straight into the shelter as she was off on a trip and had nowhere to leave her. Joyce complained bitterly about being closed up in her carrier box, so volunteers quickly got down to preparing an isolated/quarantine area for her with a bed, food and water.
We couldn’t believe Joyce’s petit size and the fact that she has a real personality despite her abandonment. It has been just over a week now since she came in and her treatments are showing good improvements. She very fortunately has a new owner, a lady who is a real animal lover and who fell in love with her instantly. As soon as she is back to health with her skin problem, Joyce will be going to her new home.
The other arrival last week caught us totally by surprise when, one morning, a small beige poodle was found wandering on the street in front of Aanifeira. He was picked up by the staff as they arrived at work and brought into the clinic where the vets checked to see if he had a microchip. Incredibly he did and on checking the number with the Portuguese authorities, it was found it was a French registered microchip. After several phone calls to the French Canine Authority (SCC: Société Centrale Canine) explaining the circumstances, the name and contacts of the owner were given to us. Normal procedure by this authority is that they contact the owner to follow up as to why the dog had been found in Portugal but they also asked us to make contact as well. We are currently following up but have been unable to speak with the owner so far.
In the meantime, ‘Avec’ as we baptized him, who was very frightened and thin when he was found, has totally opened up to us and has turned out to be a wonderful little dog with very clean habits and a great personality. Before handing Avec back to his owner in France, we will carefully look into this situation and find out why it happened. The last thing we want is for this poor animal to have to go through this again! On the other hand, Avec will make great pet for a family with children, so if all else fails with the original owner, this dear little dog will have a great chance in life with a new family.
Two new additions to the shelter in one week is not uncommon for us and luckily these two beautiful animals will not have to wait too long before moving on to their homes.
