Meet Little Lucas!

We’d like you to meet Lucas.  He was found by an Aanifeira member, abandoned on the street close by to the shelter at the end of July.  The member immediately brought him into the clinic for treatment.

Vet Joana was on duty at the time and together with Kitty, our Dutch volunteer vet from Utrech University, who was here doing her internship with us, gave him a thorough examination.  They found that he was covered in ticks, had a serious case of worms, was dehydrated and extremely apathetic.  Without being sure that he would pull through, they quickly put him on intravenous infusion system with fluids and glucose to help nourish him and Kitty got down to the job of removing all the ticks!  She also named him Lucas.

He appeared to have stomach pains and was also dewormed.  Finally after two days had passed, he did his little “job” and the following day Lucas came to life!  Kitty delighted in hearing him give a tiny bark from his bed and then we knew we had life!!  During this time Kitty also took care of his feeding program hand and carefully hand fed him on special puppy food at certain times.

It took a week for Lucas to finally get some colour back into him and we saw him become a puppy again -playing, barking and eating on his own.  He continued to flourish daily with all the care and attention he received at the Aanifeira clinic and it has been a pleasure to follow this beautiful little pup’s progress.  Kitty has now left us to continue her veterinary course in Holland and Lucas will eventually be put up for adoption.  We will be looking very carefully for a special adoptee as we do not want him to have to face this sort of treatment and abandonment again.

Our grateful thanks go out to Kitty who worked tirelessly behind the scenes giving little Lucas the special backup treatment that he deserved.  Great job Kitty!!

  1. Lovely story and wonderful work by everyone. But you need to move your comma in the first sentence as, at present, it reads that the little pup was abandoned by an Aanifeira member! You need the comma before ‘abandoned’, not after.
