Animals Have No Barriers

Around seven years ago or so, a mother dog with two female pups were abandoned at the gates of Aanifeira.   The bitch was in a terrible state of emaciation and could barely stand.  Her two tiny pups were also thin and extremely malnourished.

Ameixa and her family were taken into the shelter and carefully nursed back to health, all surviving their terrible ordeal.

It was during that period of nursing that a box a puppies was, once again, dumped at Aanifeira’s gates. Volunteers found to their horror that all of them were dead except for a very small female puppy.  The thought was what to do to save the tiny pup, and so Pilar was introduced to Ameixa to see if she would accept it as her own and she did!

Abrunha, Conchita & Pilar

Ameixa did a wonderful task of nursing her three daughters, Abunha, Conchita and Pilar, and bringing them up to become a very close-knit family. What was still more amazing to us all and to those who visit Aanifeira, is that Pilar looks just so like her two adopted sisters with the same colourings of brown and white.

This family of dogs presents a special case for Aanifeira as twice now, individual members of the family have been singularly adopted out but each pines for their other family members, going into a state of depression and have to be returned to the shelter.  We have found that the very best solution for Ameixa and her daughters would be to have them adopted out as a “family group” to one place thus ensuring that they would always be together.

Ameixa’s look in her eye shows a story of love and goodness and she is a lesson to the human race.  She and her daughters are housed in one box and are a wonderful example of a friendly group of dogs that all get on well together.
